Background:

The Baltimore Hispanic Chamber of Commerce was founded in 2001 by local Hispanic businessmen focused on:

  • Strengthening community solidarity and reducing fragmentation of effort;
  • Creating a strong lobbying effort at the state and local level; and
  • Working to promote Maryland Hispanic businesses.

While most of the organization's members are Hispanic by birth, descent, or marriage, the Chamber opens its membership to other business professionals and therefore has a culturally, racially and ethnically diverse organization.  Many of these non-Hispanic businessmen are active in Hispanic neighborhoods and want to interact with the Chamber and its members.

The Chamber sponsors monthly networking events where business owners and professionals can make key contacts, generate business opportunities and plan new ventures. Currently, 12.5 percent or 250,000 of Maryland's residents are Hispanic. This growing cultural and economic force has been recognized by government leaders with both the governor, and Baltimore Mayor appearing at Chamber events.  Their annual legislative reception held in February 2005 attracted many state legislators with the Maryland State Senate President, Thomas V. Mike Miller, as the event's guest speaker.
