Background:

The Department of Housing and Urban Development Act of 1965 created HUD as Cabinet-level agency with Robert C. Weaver as the department’s first secretary. Since that time HUD's mission  has evolved to include the duty of increasing homeownership, supporting community development and increasing access to affordable housing free from discrimination. To fulfill this mission, HUD has focused on developing a high standards of ethics, management and accountability and has worked to forge new partnerships -- particularly with faith-based and community organizations -- that leverage resources and improve HUD's ability to be effective on the community level.

The U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed Alphonso Jackson as the nation's 13th Secretary of HUD on March 31, 2004. A 25 year veteran in the field of housing and community development, He previously served as HUD’s Deputy- secretary and COO and was President and CEO of the Housing Authority of the City of Dallas, Texas,

Programs/Services:

The Community Investment Network(CIN) Affordable Housing Section highlights the various HUD programs provided to individuals and to social-profit (non-profit) agencies focused on affordable housing.  CIN has surveyed thousands of pages of the HUD Web site as well as volumes of other sources to focus on those active programs providing realistic and meaningful affordable housing assistance.  Basic information is provided with links to more detailed program data and requirements.  Those programs can be found listed to the right and in the subsections listed below.

Growing Equity Mortgage Insurance – Section 245 (a)

Section 245(a) enables a household with a limited income that is expected to rise to buy a home sooner by making mortgage payments that start small and increase gradually over time. The increased payments are applied to reduce the principal owed on the mortgage and thus shorten the mortgage term.
