Default RE: Jail/Penitentiary Partnerships

Original message from: john@dolan-heitlinger.com

As the president of a credit union I used to do 2 hour training sessions for
local jailed inmates, in the jail.

A true captive audience.

The general topic was how to use financial services.

I learned the topics of most importance to them were 1. how to repair their
credit, "I'm not making any loan payments locked up in here." and 2. how to
care for their children making sure the ex-spouse did not take the money
they sent on the child's behalf.

I also talked about the general topics of budgeting, avoiding bank fees,
danger of indebtedness. you know, the general list of good consumer
financial management items.

I also talked about how financial institutions catch schemes, like some of
the ones that had landed the inmates in jail.

A very much no-BS audience. The title "President" helped give me creds.

Yes, we work with the Womens' Correctional Facility in our area and it's been a very successful partnership. We support he womens' prison in other ways too, for example we ensure that each inmate being released has several outfits (including shoes and purses) to wear to job interviews and to help them get started on the right foot.

We teach several classes......the Psychology of Spending, Solving the Mystery of Credit Reports and Recovering From a Financial Crisis. These classes have been very well received and they inmates so appreciate the information and education!

Dear Sevag

You might be interested in some recent developments here in the UK in relation to the development of financial services for people in or leaving prison.

One big issue here is the difficulty many people in or leaving prison face in opening and using a bank current account. The Co-operative Bank was one of the few financial instutions that pioneered access to banking for people in prison.

Two reports on this Co-operative Bank initiative can be found here:

http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/HEA/financialinclusion/96249.htm

We are now working on a new project looking at how credit unions can best offer financial services in prisons

This is just a new project but information can be found here

Good wishes
