Our nascent community development credit union is looking for finance educational materials appropriate for fifth through eighth graders. We are looking for materials that have been tried and tested. They should be adaptable to fit classroom material, and include a savings component that focuses on college. Comments from those of you who have experience with this age group would be particularly welcome. Lee, The Philadelphia Fed's economic education unit has created a curriculum based on NCEE's Financial Fitness for Life. Our curriculum is used in Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. While it is geared for high school students, we have other material for younger grades. Please talk directly to Todd Zartman (215-574-6457) or contact him at the email address listed above. He can tell you about our lesson plans plus tell you who is his counterpart at a Federal Reserve Bank nearer to your school. Good luck with this. We all know that it is important. Dear Lee: FDIC offers "Money Smart for Young Adults", a free eight-module classroom curriculum written expressly for an audience aged 12 - 20. It includes several supports to help educators determine the best use within whatever time and other restraints exist. See the FDIC's Money Smart web site: http://www.fdic.gov/consumers/consum...rt/index.html. Also, the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Finance has many resources, including a searchable Clearinghouse of curriculums and other materials. There is no cost to use the Clearinghouse, and many, but not all, resources listed are free. See: http://www.jumpstart.org/jump$tart-clearinghouse.html. Lee and all, We have recently published our curriculum, called FutureProfits. It's primarily used in high schools, but we've done a number of junior highs also. It's specifically targeted at unbanked (urban, immigrant) students. NCUD also offers TA and coaching for the implementation of the curriculum. We currently use it in local schools, during the school day. We served around 500 students weekly in 2010 and about 1600 students since beginning the program in 2008. The curriculum can be bought here: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...ofits&x=0&y=0. We can also offer bulk discounts by calling our office. For more information about the program you can contact Jenni Ingram at 650-328-1890 or jenni@norcaludc.org. Dear Lee, The Learning Key, Inc offers a classroom version of the financial literacy interactive game called WiseMoney. See www.wisemoneygame.net <http://www.wisemoneygame.net/> . The simulation was designed by Dr. Elizabeth Treher, a 20 year veteran in creating learning tools for youth and adults. A program that can be used as a stand-a-slone product, in conjunction with most personal finance curriculum or as a formative assessment; WiseMoney has been used in schools in over 24 states through groups such as the BPA and FBLA. WiseMoney meets national standards for personal finance education requirements with student surveys indicating a knowledge increase from 55 to 93% after play. Content includes Banking and Investing, Budget and Payday, Finance and Credit, Financial Responsibility and Identity Protection. A family version of the game will be available beginning January, 2011 with matching content and appropriate for all ages 13 and up. Please see the website for further details or contact me at your convenience to answer any questions. Money Math: Lessons for Life is a four-lesson curriculum supplement for middle school math classes, teaching grade 7-9 math concepts using real-life examples from personal finance. The 86-page book is a teacher's guide with lesson plans, reproducible activity pages, and teaching tips. A teacher needs only one copy of Money Math: Lessons for Life to teach several classes of students. This was the result of a public-private partnership. http://www.treasurydirect.gov/indiv/..._moneymath.htm Louisa M.
