Thank you. ********************* Urban Strategies Council & LISC AmeriCorps SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT AmeriCorps Member LISC Bay Area Office - Serving at Urban Strategies Council The mission of the LISC AmeriCorps program is to transform distressed neighborhoods into healthy communities by placing AmeriCorps Members with Community Development Corporations (CDCs). LISC helps CDCs assist in the revitalization of underserved neighborhoods across America by providing financing and technical know-how to CDCs in order for the groups to develop affordable housing, spur commercial investments, create jobs and expand other services that improve the quality of life in the low-income communities where they live and work. AmeriCorps is one component of LISC's human capital agenda and seeks to attract talented individuals to serve for one year at CDCs to help build organizational capacity. Urban Strategies Council is a community building support and advocacy organization located in Oakland, California. Founded as a non-profit organization in 1987, the Council's mission is to eliminate persistent poverty by working with partners to transform low-income neighborhoods into vibrant, healthy communities. The Council uses its core skills in service to low-income communities: data and information for action; convening, facilitation & strategic planning; program and tool development; advocacy for policy and systems reform; and capacity building & technical assistance. Member Activities The member at Urban Strategies Council will serve as a Volunteer for the Economic Opportunity Program, Income and Asset Development Project. Specific projects include coordination support for the Alameda County Community Asset Network (AC CAN www.alamedacountycan.org) and implementation of the Community Resources Network for the Oakland Community Land Trust (OakCLT atwww.oakclt.org). 1. Oakland CLT: The Council is working to stabilize Oakland neighborhoods and provide permanently affordable homeownership opportunities for low-and moderate-income families. The member serving in this capacity will create the infrastructure necessary to implement a community resource program to compliment the bricks-and-mortar work of the Oakland CLT. * Conduct research and analysis to narrow down the final list of community resource offerings. * Identify and organize income and asset development resources and services for the land trust owners and residents in adjacent neighborhoods. * Establish of clearinghouse for the services, including the collection of physical resources (such as a tool lending library) and establish procedures for use. * Outreach to the community to inform residents of the available services. * Workshops on using the resources within the program. * Other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator. 2. Alameda County CAN is a working network of service providers, advocates, community based organizations, public agencies, base building groups and financial institutions that work in partnership to increase the income and assets of low and moderate Alameda County residents. The member serving in this capacity will: * Contribute to the coordination and communications of the collaborative. * Recruit new members. * Develop materials. * Deliver trainings. * Track progress. * Facilitate meetings. * Other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree preferred. High school degree, GED certificate or agree to achieve GED within the year Minimum of 18 year of age, US citizen or permanent resident status Demonstrated knowledge and experience in Public Policy, Social Work, Finance, Economics, Sociology, or related field. Excellent communication skills, verbal and written. Comfort and ability in presentation delivery and meeting facilitation. Ability to design community programs and conduct tool development. Organized, self-motivated, with great attention to detail. Demonstrated ability with computer systems, quantitative analysis skills preferred. Experience with local community work and income and asset development strongly preferred. Demonstrated commitment to economic justice. Member Benefits Full time members are required to serve for a minimum of 1,700 hours and a full year at Urban Strategies Council. Members will attend a national orientation the week of October 15, 2006 and monthly meetings and trainings hosted by the local LISC office. Urban Strategies Council will also make additional training opportunities available. Members will earn a stipend of $18,000 and are eligible to participate in the AmeriCorps health insurance program and may apply for childcare benefits. Upon successful completion of the service year, members will be eligible for a $4,725 education award to pay off existing student loans or return to school.
