Position Summary:

The Next American City is looking for a candidate with strong leadership skills who will bring creativity, high journalistic standards and a bold, fresh vision of the future of America’s cities and suburbs to our national nonprofit magazine. The Editor-in-Chief will be responsible for setting and realizing the magazine’s overall structure, coverage, and tone in a way that advances our organizational mission to identify and promote innovative approaches to socially and environmentally sustainable growth. The successful candidate will execute this broad creative vision by developing incisive content and maintaining a consistent editorial voice for the magazine’s print and web editions. The EIC will provide editorial leadership, strong management and detailed-oriented action in the day-to-day running of the magazine’s editorial activities, which include: setting and enforcing editorial deadlines and budgets, negotiating contracts, editing content, establishing productive working relationships with business staff, editors, writers and volunteers.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential to this position. The EIC will coordinate the work of both paid and volunteer writers and editors to create each issue and work closely with the Art Director on the design of content throughout the editorial and production process. He/she will work closely with the Art Director and Publisher on a strategy
to redevelop The Next American City’s online presence, and plan and produce online content. The EIC will also chair The Next American City’s editorial committee, the purpose of which is to be a support and resource in editorial planning. Where possible, the EIC will work with writers and volunteers, to develop, pitch and place op-eds based on magazine content in major newspapers and on radio. The chosen candidate will be comfortable acting as a public face of the magazine.

Responsibilities:

Planning and Management:
_ Develop and manage departmental budget.
_ Develop annual and long-term editorial plan.
_ Review and adjust editorial structure to accommodate growth.
_ Manage ongoing and new freelance relationships.
_ Coordinate with business staff on marketing and promotion of magazine and Web site.
*
Development:
_ Provide overall editorial planning and execution.
_ Solicit and manage high-quality freelancers, interns and volunteers in order to complete work on time and within budget.
_ Edit manuscripts, collaborate with Art Director in the development of content design, and interact with writers to produce high-quality manuscripts to deadline.
_ Work with paid and volunteer editorial staff to coordinate and produce front and back of the book and features.
_ Work with business staff to provide input and support for The Next American City’s related initiatives and projects and coordinate in-house content for magazine.

Editorial Production:
_ Manage editorial content throughout the editing stages, ensuring accuracy and clarity of content.
_ Prepare manuscripts, sidebars and all other editorial content for proofreading, fact checking and production, transmitting materials in an organized, timely manner.
_ Work with style and copy editor to update and maintain house style guide and word list and ensure adherence to house style by all freelancers.
_ Work with Art Director to ensure consistency and appropriateness of magazine’s design.

Required Experience:
_ Passion for The Next American City’s nonprofit mission of promoting an environmentally and socially sustainable future for America’s cities and suburbs.
_ Minimum 4 years experience in professional journalism.
_ B.A. or greater in English or related field.
_ Proven background in effective team leadership and management, budgeting, project management, multi-tasking, organization is required.
_ Demonstrated track record in high-quality editing, rewriting, and writing for a broad, popular audience, preferably with an urban focus.
_ Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Adobe InDesign 2 is essential.
_ Knowledge of urban issues, planning, and related fields necessary.
_ Experience in updating and working with Web sites a plus.
