Default Entrepreneurship Programs

Original message from: April.S.Anderson@SunTrust.com

Hi All,

I am looking for information on programs that have used entrepreneurship
as an effective means to move to self-sufficiency. In particular I'm
looking for programs that have established a track record of success in
this area, and that can demonstrate sustainability from a participant
standpoint. I'd like to speak to the program mangers to discuss best
practices, challenges, successes, etc.

Thanks.

Hi April,

There is a great program that was started by Catherine Rohr. Her nonprofit is called Prison Entrepreneurship Program (PEP) and focuses on addressing one of the fundamental issues with integrating former inmates back into communities - employment and the perception of employability. It equips these individuals with tools to become entrepreneurs and employers of individuals emerging from similar situations. I've attached the links to the Inc article and PEP's website below.

There are excellent programs around the US as well as some studies and publications on the subject. AEO has members around the country and you will likely be able to locate an organization near you. Aspen Institute and Corporation for Enterprise Opportunity are great resources for information on entrepreneurship and poverty alleviation.

Most entrepreneurship education programs are built around the business
planning process, but most entrepreneurs have considerable business
experience before sitting down to write their business plan.

EnterprisePrepT offers young people - particularly low-income,
low-performing students at risk of dropping out and disconnected youth - the
opportunities with responsibilities of real business ownership. Their
entrepreneurial experience enables them to build the cultural and conceptual
foundation of values, attributes, and skills most entrepreneurs learn at
home or early in their careers, and all entrepreneurs need to turn their
business plans into successful enterprises.

EnterprisePrepT students live the culture of entrepreneurship to learn it.
Owners work hard and smart. They learn and apply critical thinking,
leadership, and other entrepreneurial skills; develop initiative,
resourcefulness and other entrepreneurial characteristics. They earn
profits - money, but also fulfillment, pride, and respect - proving to
themselves that learning is valuable, opportunity attainable, and
responsibility.

Thinking and feeling like entrepreneurs, becoming enterprising, student
Owners stay in (or return to) school engaged in now meaningful learning.

To learn more, please visit our web site, call or email.
