Position: Controller The Organization: Self-Help is a community development lender founded in 1980 that creates and protects ownership and economic opportunity for minority, women-headed, rural and low-wealth families through home and small business lending. It has provided over $5 billion in financing to help more than 55,000 low-wealth borrowers buy homes, start and build businesses, and strengthen community resources across the country. Self-Help's affiliate, the Center for Responsible Lending, researches and advocates for state and national legislation to address predatory lending practices and policies. Self-Help and the Center for Responsible Lending are national organizations based out of Durham, North Carolina with 10 regional offices in North Carolina, Washington DC, and California. Nationally and internationally recognized as a leader in community development lending, Self-Help is one of twelve nonprofits featured in Forces for Good: The Six Practices of High Impact Nonprofits. Position Description: Direct the accounting affairs of the organization and supervise the production of financial statements and reports. Principal Responsibilities: * Ensure that all monthly financial statements are prepared on a timely and accurate basis for all Self-Help entities, including five primary corporations and 30 subsidiaries. * Update, develop and maintain accounting practices and policies, and financial controls. * Serve as lead contact with outside auditors and accountants in the preparation of annual financial statements, with supporting schedules and tax filings. * Work with Chief Financial Officer, other senior management, financial management and accounting staff to ensure that financial practices are up to date and relevant. Perform other tasks as designated by CFO. Required Qualifications: CPA and a minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a financial institution, in either a senior level or in progressively senior positions. The candidate needs to have excellent accounting and organizational skills, and strong spreadsheet skills. The candidate should be a well-organized self-starter with strong communications skills. Teamwork and sensitivity to issues of low-wealth borrowers and a desire to work in a racially and socially diverse organization are essential Self-Help values. Desired Qualifications: Personnel management, financial management, and/or an advanced degree in a relevant field, such as a MAC or MBA. Experience in not-for-profit accounting. Position Description: The accountant will be responsible for the complete preparation and closing of the financial statements of Self-Help Federal Credit Union, a two-state, multi-branch credit union. Principal Responsibilities: * Ensure that all monthly financial statements are prepared on a timely and accurate basis. * Create and post general journal entries, and reconcile bank statements and other key accounts. * Reconcile major subledgers to each other and general ledger. * Produce and file quarterly regulatory financial filings with federal regulatory agency. * Respond to various requests for information, from both internal and external sources. Required Qualifications: Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience, preferably in a financial institution, in progressively senior positions.
