Banking on the Community Reinvestment Act: How CRA Builds Neighborhood
Wealth, Consumer Assets, and Neighborhood VITA Programs - December 17,
1:30 to 3:30 PM

Presented by the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC) and
the Center for Economic Progress, this webinar will describe the how CRA
works, the wealth building stimulated by CRA, and provide details on
VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) programs as an asset building
tool. CRA stops predatory lending, promotes foreclosure prevention, and
builds neighborhood wealth through increases in small business and
homeownership. Learn how CRA exams scrutinize bank lending, investing,
services, and branching in low- and moderate-income communities.
Community group comments on CRA exams and merger applications can result
in increases in bank financing and services for communities.

For low-income families, their tax refund comprises a significant source
of savings and can also help families meet living expenses. Part of the
refund, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a major federal
anti-poverty program, lifting millions of working American families out
of poverty. Learn how to promote the EITC and instant refund products,
host a Volunteer Tax Income Assistance program that prepares tax returns
for free, and how VITA programs link low-income consumers to mainstream
financial services, education and counseling, and asset-building
products. Gain insight into how CRA can help finance VITA and
asset-building programs.
