Thanks a lot Penny Simpson CED Centre SFU ><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>< PREPARING FOR NOW! A Conference on Community Tools and Strategies for Economic Renewal June 15-17, 1995 SFU Harbour Centre, Vancouver _Highlights:_ * Putting Structural Change in Perspective * Local Economic Strategies in a Changing World * Successful Development for First Nations * Looking at Communities Most Likely to Succeed * CED and Social Development * Enhancing Local Financial Capacity * Governments as Facilitators * CED: Changing the Shape of the Future _Conference Perspective_ Communities in virtually every region of British Columbia are facing major economic change, right NOW! Those with economic bases in forestry, mining, energy, and fishing, in particular, are caught in processes of global restructuring and environmental re-assessment. But no community is immune to job loss and social dislocation. Yet, communities that are urban, rural, First Nations, north and south, are taking the initiative to renew their economies and social fabric. Community leaders and everyday citizens along with business people and government officials are looking for integrated ways both to create jobs and address social problems. Self-management of the local economy is increasingly recognized as a viable approach to both these priorities. _A Working Definition of Community Economic Development:_ CED is a process by which communities can initiate and generate their own solutions to their common economic problems and thereby build long-term community capacity and foster the integration of economic, social and environmental objectives. (Based on Ross-McRobie Report, 1987) _The Conference Goal:_ To provide the opportunity for local stakeholders, and all those engaged in CED practice, to share knowledge and experience of "best practice", innovation, practical tools and down-to-earth strategies for community renewal that can be applied NOW! This conference will build on these local initiatives that draw communities together. Moreover, the tools they need are available - NOW! - to develop sustainable economies and healthy communities. "Preparing for NOW!" will make accessible to communities tools that they can employ in managing their own economies. _A Shortlist of Proven CED Tools_ * Import substitution and value-added programs * Community loan funds * Local barter programs * Community land trusts * Community self-assessment _Conference Participants_ "Preparing for NOW!" will bring together interested citizens, community volunteers, community economic development practitioners, business people, local and regional government officials, researchers, teachers/academics and consultants, the private sector, government, and First Nations. Community stakeholders from all parts of the province will be encouraged to attend. An essential feature of the Conference is to put delegates in touch with people in other communities to share their stories of economic change and renewal. _Conference Format_ The Conference will promote hands-on learning experiences in a neighbourly environment. CED tools will be presented in appropriate settings - demonstrations, clinics, workshops, displays, and panel discussions - by people with direct experience in their use. Participants will have immediate access to ideas, experience and information for matching their chosen strategies with the best practices available today. Publications and audio-tapes of presentations and self-help manuals will also be available. Community strategies for self management, strengthening sustainable local economies, building new institutions, enhancing financial capabilities, and exchanging information, will be presented for roundtable discussion. To establish the larger context, speakers will focus on key concepts underlying structural change and the power of communities to respond. _Connections Program_ A program to link up Conference participants and others in the CED field has been established. It will enable a direct and personal relationship among Conference planners and participants prior to, during, and following the Conference. The Connections Program will function through telephone, fax, e-mail, and regular mail, to allow all participants to establish connections. Conference issues, discussion papers, and participant suggestions will be shared. There is no charge for participation in the Connections Program, nor is there any need make an advance commitment to attend the conference. Simply contact us by telephone, mail, fax or by e-mail. E-mail access to the Connections Program will begin early in 1995. _Conference Costs_ Early registration (received by March 31, 1995): $275 Full Registration: $325 Students: $160 Registration at the door: $365 For those who may be prevented financially from attending, we are planning a subsidy program.
