Information about this series:
This 60 minute session will provide participants with an opportunity to
learn about how microfinance can serve as a catalyst to increasing
economic opportunity in low- to moderate-income communities in the U.S.
Listeners will hear about the diversity of the microfinance industry and
will learn about one model, the Grameen microfinance organization, founded
in Bangladesh and replicated in developing countries. During this session
we will examine Grameen America’s rapid and recent growth in the U.S.
market, discuss this model’s strengths and limitations, and will leave
time to address participant questions. This session has been organized by
the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and in partnership with the Federal
Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

About Connecting Communities™ is a new call-in series that allows
community development professionals from across the country to connect
with industry experts to hear and discuss current developments and
initiatives. Hosted by the Federal Reserve System, the series’ topics will
vary and will also be of interest to economic development professionals,
financial institution representatives, community advocates and
policymakers.
All sessions are free and open to the public, but pre-registration is
required. After registering, connecting is simple. All that is needed is a
telephone to access the live conference call via a toll-free number, and a
web connection to view the speakers’ presentations. Both the audio of the
session and the slides will be archived on the Connecting Communities site
for future reference.
