Special Assistant to California Managing Director

Background:

Self-Help is a nationally recognized nonprofit community development
lender, real estate developer, and credit union. Since it's founding in
1980, it has provided more than $5.95 billion of financing to over
71,000 families of modest means, small businesses and nonprofit
organizations. In 2006, Self-Help expanded to California in further
pursuit of its mission: Creating and protecting ownership and economic
opportunity for all, especially people of color, women, rural residents
and low-wealth families and communities. Its primary focus in California
is to build Self-Help Federal Credit Union into a statewide network of
branches serving working families and generally underserved communities.
Since receiving its charter in 2008, Self-Help Federal has grown
primarily by merging the operations of seven credit unions and now has
18 branches, almost $400 million in assets and 50,000 members.

Position Summary:

Provide critical high-level project support to the Managing Director and
President of Self-Help Federal Credit Union, and Chief Operating Officer
(COO) of California operations. Initially at least, the position will
focus on supporting all aspects of Self-Help Federal's continuing merger
strategy, as well as other senior staff projects and activities. The
multi-faceted role of the Special Assistant will include a range a
responsibilities that will enable a more effective expansion of
Self-Help's work in California. The position is based in Oakland, but
will involve significant travel, mostly in California.

Responsiblities:

* Work closely with MD/COO, and other senior executives, on credit
union merger strategy
* Raising capital to support continued growth
* Industry analysis and candidate identification
* Merger process/relationship management
* Candidate analysis
* Integration planning and tracking - including significant work
with other operating managers throughout the credit union
* Manage projects designed and directed by the MD/COO that are
critical to advancing organizational priorities, including creating
systems to help manage the organizations rapid growth.
* Work closely with other Self-Help senior managers, often
providing project based and analytical support to their priority
projects.
* Assist MD (and Director of CRL in California) in development of
a senior level California Advisory Board for both Self-Help and CRL in
California.

Qualifications:

* Minimum of an undergraduate degree and 2-5 years related
professional experience, which could include: finance, private equity,
banking, credit union or business management, management consulting, or
community development.
* MBA or graduate degree in another related field preferred.
* Significant financial/analytical aptitude and experience.
* Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
* Spanish speaking preferred.
* Excellent interpersonal skills - with varied cultural contexts.
* A self-starter and fast learner; able to successfully multi-task
and function well with minimal direction.
* Interest in and experience with community economic development
programs.
* Sensitivity to issues of low-wealth families and communities,
and a desire to work in a racially and socially diverse organization.
* Sincere commitment to teamwork

Compensation:
