More information on City First Homes:

Learn more at www.cfhomes.org. CFHomes is a 501c3 not-for-profit
organization supported by the Washington, DC government. CFHomes helps
low- and moderate-income households to access homeownership sooner than
otherwise possible. CFHomes was created as a result of an act of DC city
legislation. City First Homes offers an alternative to the current
national paradigm of affordable housing: large-scale, concentrated,
continually subsidized public housing. In contrast, City First Homes
supports the development of mixed-income communities through the
creation of permanently affordable, shared-appreciation homes. At a time
when public budgets are constrained, City First Homes leverages a thin,
one-time subsidy to create a model of homeownership that remains
affordable in perpetuity. The program supports families who had
previously been priced out of the homeownership market, to leave renting
and access the long term wealth-building benefits and stability of
owning a home. Several research studies have been conducted to show the
effectiveness of shared-appreciation to preserve affordability. CFHomes'
down payment assistance makes owning a home more affordable by reducing
monthly and upfront costs. If they sell, CFHomes homeowners agree to
share a percentage of the home's appreciation with the next buyer, to
keep the home "permanently affordable," an exciting and innovative model
that is fiscally responsible and ensures that neighborhoods remain
affordable to all. CFHomes owners build significant wealth through
equity payments and tax benefits, and far more wealth than renting.
CFHomes has been covered by The Washington Post, McClatchey,
Washington's local NPR station, and Urban Land Magazine.
