Expanded Credit Union Conference Explores Economic Opportunities In Indian Country
WASHINGTON, DC-January 21, 2003-The National American Indian Housing Council (NAIHC) will hold its third Native American Credit Union Conference, March 5, 2003 in Washington, DC to promote the benefits of credit unions for tribes.* The conference follows NAIHC's annual Legislative Conference, March 3-4 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington.
The all-day conference will have an expanded format with more speakers, allowing in-depth discussion and networking opportunities for participants.* A number of credit union industry leaders have been invited, including representatives from the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions, Credit Union National Association, as well as the National Credit Union Administration, a regulator.* In addition, invitations were extended to leaders at Native-affiliated credit unions, such as: Sisseton Wahpeton Federal Credit Union (SD), Lac Courte Oreilles Federal Credit Union (WI) and First American Credit Union (AZ).* First American is the oldest and largest Native American credit union.
Conference organizer, Jane DeMarines, NAIHC's Director of Communications and External Relations said, "It would behoove tribes to start their own credit unions and bring valuable services, like savings and lending opportunities, to tribal areas.* This conference is designed to help create greater awareness of the benefits of the credit union structure, and also highlight available funding assistance, such as the CDFI (Community Development Financial Institutions) Fund that can help tribes with seed money and technical assistance.* We hope to encourage financial institutions to create partnerships with tribes, to inform them of the opportunities for growth in Indian country, leading to greater economic progress in tribal areas.* In many areas of Indian country there is a dearth of financial institutions on or near tribal lands."
NAIHC Executive Director, Gary Gordon added, "We are encouraging those involved in Native American programs, and tribal leaders to attend this conference. Previous conferences created awareness of additional credit opportunities for tribes, particularly to underserved populations, like Native Americans living on reservations where banking services are scarce. Many Native Americans lack adequate access to banking services or find borrowing to be a difficult process further complicated by unfair lending practices."*
Conference Details
The credit union conference will be at the JW Marriott Hotel in Washington, DC. There is no fee for tribal representatives, although other attendees may be charged a small materials fee.* To register, fax your name, address, phone number, email address and the name of your organization to (202) 789-1758.*
The conference is being offered through a Ford Foundation grant, in partnership with The Enterprise Foundation and the National Credit Union Foundation.* NAIHC held two credit union conferences last year, in Oklahoma and Oregon.
