Title:
Financial Diaries Data Analyst (Part-time)
Reports to:
Principal Investigator for Financial Diaries and Director of Consumer Research

Summary:
Microfinance Opportunities seeks a candidate to conduct data analysis for multiple financial diaries projects.
Microfinance Opportunities is a hub for the development of creative ideas and solutions related to poor people and their money. We increase poor people's access to high-quality financial services through action-research, training, and technical assistance. A non-profit established in 2002, Microfinance Opportunities has led the way in promoting a consumer perspective to financial inclusion and sound financial practices among the world's poor. Activities range from development and delivery of financial education, to market research for product development, and the measurement of the impact of microfinance innovations. Microfinance Opportunities specializes in qualitative research, using cutting edge methods such as financial diaries to assess microfinance programs.
Financial Diaries research involves weekly interviews with 50 to 200 households over periods ranging from 10 to 18 months to identify all financial inflows and outflows. The resulting data sets are large and complex. The Analyst will code and organize the date to prepare it for analysis. They will also conduct analyses of the data under the direct supervision of MFO's Principal Investigator for Financial Diaries.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist the Principle Investigator in analysis of data sets and tasks related to reporting and presenting findings. Assignments include but are not be limited to:
* Macro-level analyses to identify patterns in sequences of transactions;
* Micro-level analyses of sequences of transactions to develop case-study illustrations of macro-level patterns; and
* Development of tables and graphs for inclusion in reports and presentations.
Desired Qualifications:
We are looking for a person who understands numbers and how to tell stories with them. The ideal candidate is one who enjoys working with large complex, datasets. Additional qualifications include:
* M.A. in a Social Science or related discipline with demonstrated mastery (either through course work or work experience) of basic statistics and knowledge of basic statistical tests such as chi-square tests, comparison of means, and correlations
* Proactive work style and ability to work independently and in a team that will produce reports targeted at microfinance practitioners, stakeholders and funders
* Strong interpersonal skills and ability to coordinate and collaborate well under pressure
* Developing country knowledge, demonstrated by course work and/or experience
* Willingness to learn to use non-parametric tests (beyond chi-square) of differences in samples, and Monte Carlo methods for identifying non-random phenomena
* Willingness to learn how to develop and implement coding protocols applied to large numbers of data records
The Analyst should have the following software skills:
* Microsoft Access - advanced capabilities required including the ability to build queries to organize data for further analysis in Excel and SPSS or some other statistical package;
* Excel -- ability to use pivot tables to organize and analyze data; ability to generate tables and graphs for reports and presentations; and
* SPSS -- familiarity with SPSS, though familiarity with some other statistical package, such as STATA may be acceptable.
The position reports to the Principal Investigator of Financial Diaries regarding technical matters and to the Director of Consumer Research for administrative issues.
All interested applications must be authorized to work in the U.S. at the time of application. Position is part-time (15-20 hours a week) for six months. Salary is commensurate with experience. Position does not provide for relocation expenses.
