Natural Capital Investment Fund, Inc.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to NCIF’s Director of Lending, the Business Lender is responsible for generating new loans for NCIF’s new Central Appalachian Fund, servicing a loan portfolio that meets NCIF’s mission, financial and risk goals, and assisting with the refinement of NCIF’s policies and practices. The Central Appalachian Fund will target small and mid-sized renewable energy, sustainable forestry and value-added agricultural businesses in West Virginia, southwest Virginia, northeast Tennessee, Kentucky, and southeast Ohio.

 

BACKGROUND

Natural Capital Investment Fund (www.wvncif.org<http://www.wvncif.org/>) ('http://www.wvncif.org/>)') is a non-profit affiliate of The Conservation Fund (www.conservationfund.org<http://www.conservationfund.org/>), ('http://www.conservationfund.org/>),') a national nonprofit organization focused on environmental protection and economic development. The Natural Capital Investment Fund (NCIF) was established in 2000 to provide access to patient capital for natural resource based enterprises. NCIF serves small and emerging natural resource-based businesses throughout Appalachian Kentucky and Ohio, West Virginia, southwest Virginia, North Carolina, and northeast Tennessee with debt and equity financing. NCIF's business clients are predominately located in economically distressed rural communities and are unable to access adequate capital from traditional sources.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

* Actively prospects for loan and investment opportunities from multiple sources, including lending institutions, community economic development organizations, and sector-specific organizations and associations.

* Effectively markets and represents NCIF at conferences, in one-on-one meetings, and in the media to a range of audiences.

* Fields small business financing requests and applications to determine fit with NCIF’s investment strategy and overall portfolio.

* Evaluates loan and investment requests; conducts due diligence; writes investment recommendations and proposed terms and conditions, utilizing NCIF’s underwriting guidelines and financial analysis software to evaluate the company’s credit/investment worthiness and risk; presents recommendations to NCIF Investment Committees; negotiates terms and conditions of investment with the applicant; works with NCIF legal counsel to prepare investment documents; conducts loan/investment closings. After loans are approved, continue to monitor borrower’s financial and organizational health, recommend action and restructure loans when necessary.

* Maintains NCIF databases and files related to portfolio companies, prospect companies, community partners on a continuous basis.

* Assists NCIF’s Director of Lending and President in driving continuous improvement in NCIF’s: underwriting and loan/investment policies and practices; operating practices; and marketing and outreach practices and materials.

* Provides and brokers business and sector related technical assistance for NCIF’s applicants and portfolio, community organizations and partners.

* Assists with annual site visits to and gathering data from portfolio companies to assess company progress on achieving triple-bottom-line outcomes and financial condition.

* Performs other duties as assigned by the NCIF Director of Lending. These may include but are not limited to: portfolio analysis; assisting with building NCIF’s capital pool; and advising on other business finance-related projects as needed.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

* A financial background with a strong understanding of balance sheet, income statement and cash flow analysis and loan underwriting.

* Impeccable personal integrity; ability to maintain confidentiality of customer data.

* Strong analytical, time management, and organizational skills, including a high level of attention to detail.

* Ability to write well, communicate verbally in a succinct and persuasive manner, and interact effectively with a wide range of individuals, e.g., colleagues, lenders, funders, low-wealth borrowers, and technical assistance providers.

* A demonstrated "can-do" entrepreneurial attitude appropriate for a business-oriented non-profit.

* Ability to learn quickly. Open to taking on new projects and responsibilities with a positive attitude and a sense of humor.

* Commitment to and interest in NCIF’s and TCF’s organizational mission. Interest in supporting environmental businesses and economic development that benefit low-income communities.

* At least a BA/BS degree in finance, business administration, accounting, community development, or in a related field. Advanced degree in related field preferable.

* A minimum of five years experience in small business lending, assistance or management with commercial loan underwriting responsibilities required. Prior lending and or business experience with renewable energy, sustainable forestry and value-added agricultural businesses preferable.

* Strong computer skills, including experience with word processing, spreadsheets, and database programs (Microsoft Office software: Word, Excel, and Access). Experience with The Exceptional Assistant, and Cash Suite helpful but not required.

* Willingness to travel. Must have a current, valid driver’s license with the unrestricted ability to travel independently to various locations as required. A driving report from the department of motor vehicles (DMV) will be conducted for employment purposes.
