Dear Colleagues,

Does anyone know if someone has done a study of where they've taken two
groups that are largely if not entirely alike and invested in
microenterprise activities with one and not the other and measured the
difference in outcomes over time? I know the Aspen Institute has done
several studies that measures client outcomes, but I have not yet come
across a study that measure the outcomes with a control group. Any advice
and help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Anee

Hi Anee,

Dean Karlan of MIT/Innovations for Poverty Action has done
longitudinal studies with controls groups, many of which are
published on the microfinancegateway.org.

IPA's website is:

I believe there was one such study, many years ago (Dept. of Labor?). The microenterprise development field is long overdue for such a study. Rob Fairlie (UC Santa Cruz) and I would be very interested in conducting such a study if we could get a program with a sufficiently large client base to work with us.

If anyone out there is interested, let me know!
