Community Development Banking List

Several years ago we had a brief discussion online about what
organizations do to track community impact. I'd like to update that
discussion.
Most of us track community impact, either for our funders, or our
management. Some call it outputs, some call it outcomes. I'm talking
about tracking the number of jobs created/retained, affordable housing
units developed, spaces for children in childcare centers, etc.
Focusing on jobs, what do you do, if anything, to obtain this data. How
about verification? How do you get it? Do you rely, as most of us do, on
someone telling you the numbers? If so, do you verify them? How?
I'd appreciate your comments. Thanks.

We, of course check with the business that was funded for the actual numbers post funding - we also measure this against the industry norms for that business type. We do the same for wages. For units developed directly - that is a direct number and tested against the rent roll based on the area gross median income and the targeted affordability and number of units in each targeted income range. For for-sale units this is tested based on sales price and calculated on affordability based on principal, interest, taxes and insurance as a percent of the income for the targeted income ranges. For childcare and other services we request the data on the number of persons served and review this against the number of persons served by square foot in other area institutions providing similar services.
As we provided impact analysis services for both pre and post development services on a nationwide basis it is somewhat easier for us to test this against the developments we fund ourselves since we are generating the data more frequently -
Hope this is helpful to you
Terri
