I am interested in purchasing and using a SIMPLE mapping software in order to make geographic data more visual.* For example I would like to be able to show demographic data such as the % of households living in poverty by county in a given state.* Or I would like to be able to show relative measures of distress by a region in a state or by neighborhood in a city.* I am not interested in a program that has all the bells and whistles and will only be using it occasionally.* I am wondering if anyone on the list has experience with Mapland which is an add-on to excel (http://www.softill.com/home.html). *If so what has your experience been?* Are there other SIMPLE programs anyone would recommend?* What are the main considerations in purchasing this type of program for a non-quantitative person like me?
*
Thanks in advance for any advise.

ArcGIS is the leader in desktop mapping. This software allows you to do exactly what you have mentioned, plus other things like geocode (which is address mapping). My company teaches a one day workshop which teaches you how to do thematic mapping, how to get and map census data, geocoding and spatial queries, which I consider the essentials of what folks in community services need.
Anyone can get a free two month copy of ArcGIS here http://gis.esri.com/emails/av92cd/index.cfm* So you can at least install it and see what you think about it.
*
I'm not sure what city you are in but we have classes coming up in NYC, Des Moines, Portland, Seattle, Phoenix, all over Texas, Baltimore, Boston and Chicago.* You can get more detailed info here http://www.urban-research.info/home/* One cool thing about these workshops is that each*one is customized for the city/state in which it is taught.
I'm happy to answer any other questions you might have. And Good Luck! GIS is a great tool for community analysis. It's great for mapping HMDA data or Census data or your own data.

"ditto" on MapPoint. It has a very easy-to-use interface and can do all that you're looking for. I use it for a variety of visual tracking situations.

In response to some of the emails about mapping applications, I wanted to let you know that The Reinvestment Fund is developing an online mapping application called PolicyMap.* PolicyMap will be available at the end of October and will provide users with the ability to make maps, tables, charts and reports in a sophisticated, user-friendly web platform.* We’ve loaded PolicyMap with nearly 5,000 indicators related to demographics, real estate markets, crime, health, schools, housing affordability, employment, energy and public investments.* Much of the data will be available to the public for free.* Proprietary data, such as demographic and employment projections, as well as home sale trends will be available for a fee. I am attaching a description of PolicyMap for your information and would recommend that anyone who is interested in learning more visit our web site at www.policymap.com (http://www.policymap.com/).* *
