I am an attorney in private practice with a secured lending
background seeking a career change and have become very
interested in microfinance/community lending. Does anyone out
there have any information regarding employment possibilities,
as well as any general advice, for someone in my position?
Thank you.

Greetings Mr. Young:
*<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
I completely understand your frustration with wanting to make a career change but not knowing exactly how to do that.* My professional background is Non-Profit (Program Development), Financial Services, and Marketing.* I have an undergraduate degree in Social Psychology, a master’s degree in Social Work with an emphasis on Community Economic Development.* The obstacles I encountered when applying for* positions in Economic Development was the lack of lending experience so I decided to work at Bank; then I realized most banks do not have a focus on Economic Development even if they have a “Community Reinvestment Division” (relating to the CRA legislation), it was more of an after thought.** It was not until recently, I observed local, state or federal government branches have Community & Economic Divisions, which is exactly where I want to be. Because they have programs which deal with:
·******* Affordable housing for low/moderate income individuals and families,
·******* Community services targeted to low/moderate income individuals and families,
·******* Promoting economic development by financing small businesses for marginalized entrepreneurs,
·******* Neighborhood revitalization or stabilization for low/moderate communities. *
*
Lastly, here are several organizations with networking opportunities and job listings

·******* http://www.enterprisecommunity.com/home.html
·******* http://www.iedconline.org/

Good luck with your search and let me know how it goes.

Too bad you didn’t live in Madison, Wisconsin – I would love to talk with you!* Lee, my recommendation to you is to seek out the CDFI world – it’s very gratifying – and that’s coming from someone who started her career in community development at a housing authority and then went into banking and then owned her own business.* I tell everyone that the stars aligned!* I wake up everyday feeling guilty because I am so darned happy and so love my job!*
*
Good luck!
*
PS I know a lot of lawyers who changed professions and are very satisfied and never regret the decision.*
*
Cheers,
Salli
