Two places to check when looking for local partnerships for banking and
credit counseling around the U.S.
CDFIs (Community Development Finance Institutions) have been established
specifically to address communities under-served (or not served) by
traditional banking institutions. To find your local CDFI, check out the
Department of Treasury site http://www.treas.gov/cdfi
<http://www.treas.gov/cdfi> or the Coalition of CDFIs at
http://www.cdfi.org <http://www.cdfi.org/> .
Many NeighborWorks® organizations across the country have credit counseling
programs (and some are CDFIs). To find your local organization, check out
http://www.nw.org <http://www.nw.org/>
Hope this is helpful.

Subject: Looking for Credit Counseling Group in MIami, FL
There is a 400 person company located in Miami, Fl that has approx. 200
employees that would be considered lower income individuals. The group has
a high rate of credit problems and a large percentage of bankruptcy filings.
I am trying to help them organize credit counseling for their employees as
well a provide options other than check cashing stores and payday advance
loans. If you are aware of any programs in S. Florida that would facilitate
the opening of bank accounts for this group, please advise. thank you. david

I suggest you contact Nancy Register at the Consumer Federation of America.
Nancy is the director of State and Local Development and works with consumer
groups all over the country. She may have a referral for Miami. Good luck.

The California Reinvestment Committee, a coalition of more than two
hundred nonprofit organizations working on community reinvestment
issues, has just put up a web site at www.calreinvest.org. Please look
it up and find information on community reinvestment in California.
