Neighborhood indicator information systems are an important breakthrough
for community groups looking to understand neighborhood health and
change and to influence local government, potential investors and
others. The National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership (NNIP) is a
collaborative effort by the Urban Institute and local partners to
further the development and use of neighborhood level information
systems in community building and local policy making. The NNIP’s local
partners have built locally self sustaining information systems with up
to date information on neighborhood conditions in their cities. They
facilitate the practical use of data by community leaders and
concentrate on using information to build the capacities of institutions
and residents in distressed urban neighborhoods.

With support from the Casey and Rockefeller Foundations, the concept has
gained substantial momentum over the past year. The Partnership has
expanded the number of local members; developed new tools for those
interested in developing community-serving indicator systems; and
conducted analyses of neighborhood issues and expanded its outreach.
