Hey folks,
I'm compiling a list of large community development banks (not loan funds).
So far I know details only about South Shore in Chicago and Community
Capital Bank in Boston. Please forward detailed contact info and websites
for others, i.e., I hear there are a few out in California.
Thanks, Vanessa

Community Capital Bank is in Brooklyn, NY, not Boston. Its founder, Lyndon
Comstock, helped replicate his model in Oakland, CA, and it's called
Community Bank of the Bay. The other famous cmty dev't bank (modeled after
Southshore) is called Southern Dev't Bankcorp in Arkansas (which is why
Clinton is a knowledgeable proponent of CDFIs in general). The Coalition
of Cmty Dev't Financial Institutions (CDFI)* has a good web page that give
background on each of these organizations and contacts where one can locate
further information. Their url is http:/www.cdfi.org/ -- check out the
"members" page.
Happy hunting --
Monica Brand
*The CDFI coalition was created by the National Community Capital
Association (formerly named the National Assn of Community Dev't Loan
Funds), which is also a good source of information: http://www.nacdlf.org/

Vanessa:
Another community bank exists in Brooklyn, New York, also called Community
Capital Bank.
It was founded about 10 years ago by a group of Brooklyn activists including
Lyndon Comstock and Brooklyn Ecumenical Cooperatives, a religous-based
empowerment organization. Lyndon has now started a new community bank in
the Bay area of California.
The address of Community Capital Bank is 111 Livingston Avenue, Brooklyn New
York 11201.
Their phone number is 718-802-1212. The president I believe is Gina Bolden.
In 1994 total assets of the bank were $25 million and total deposits were
$20 million.

In your correspondence regarding community development banks, you (correctly
and helpfully) refer the inquirer to the CDFI Coalition.
However, it is not quite correct to state that:
"The CDFI coalition was created by the National Community Capital
Association (formerly named the National Assn of Community Dev't Loan
Funds)..."
The CDFI Coalition was created a number of years ago not only by (then)
NACDLF, but jointly by our organization, the National Federation of Community
Development Credit Unions;Community Capital Bank; the Center for Self-Help;
Woodstock Institute, and others, with additional organizations joining
thereafter.
The Coalition is indeed housd at NCCA (formerly NACDLF).
