<x-flowed>I'm interested in learning more about players in the Bay Area that are doing
good/proactive community development finance work in the Bay Area.

Banks?
Microlenders?
Foundations?
Community Development Credit Unions?
Other non-profit economic development organizations?

Any ideas, please pass them onto me.

Thanks, I appreciate it!

Contact the Community Affairs department at the Federal Reserve Bank of San

<x-flowed>Another Oakland-based resource serving the entire state is the California
Economic Development Lending Initiative (CEDLI). CEDLI is a multi-bank
community dev't corporation that makes loans to near-bankable businesses,
through partnerships with banks and other (i.e., nonprofit) lending
intermediaries. It also has a nonprofit affiliate -- California Resources
and Training (CARAT) -- which provides capacity building and other
technical assistance to economic development organizations throughout the
state. CEDLI's phone number is 510-267-8990.

Rural Community Assistance Corporation, while located in West Sacramento,
CA, somewhat outside the direct Bay Area is a CDFI and a nonprofit public
benefit corporation. RCAC is dedicated to improving the quality of life
for rural communities and disadvantaged people through partnerships,
technical assistance and access to resources. RCAC works in rural
communities with nonprofits, public agencies and districts, and tribes to
provide technical assistance for water and wastewater systems and
operators, solid waste, affordable housing and community development. Our
region encompasses the twelve Western states: Alaska, Arizona, California,
Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and
Washington. We have offices throughout this region.

RCAC also operates a $46 million revolving loan fund which makes short-term
loans for affordable housing, environmental infrastructure and community
facilities (health care, domestic violence shelters, adult day health care,
child care, social service providers, etc.) in (or serving) rural, low
income areas. Additionally, we make long-term loans for community
facilities targeting the same groups. We lend to other nonprofits as well
as public agencies for projects whose beneficiaries are 51% rural, low
income, tribal, farm workers or other disadvantaged persons. Primarily,
RCAC is a gap lender making non-bankable loans and developing innovative
lending programs and products to help serve the financial needs of rural
communities and disadvantaged populations.

I keep seeing postings from friends about Bay Ar ea CDFI's, and hoping that
one of them will mention our humble organization . . . does the Bay Area not
include San Jose? (guess we'll have to toot our own horn again)

Lenders for Community Development is located in San Jose and serves Santa
Clara and San Mateo Counties. We are a multi-bank CDC, make small business
micro-loans, affordable housing loans and loans for community facilities.
We've been lending since 1995, and have lent out over $10 million. Our
website is at "www.L4CD.com"

Another interesting, newer CDFI is Silicon Valley Community Ventures, a
community development venture capital fund. Their website is at
"www.svcv.org"
