WELCOME TO CHANGZHOU



>From September 20 to 24 this year, the Municipal Government of Changzhou
will once again cooperate with the World Association for Small and
Medium Enterprises (WASME) by holding in Grand Hotel,Changzhou, the
First International Symposium on Rural Industrialization. WASME is an
international non-governmental organisation set up 19 years back with
members and associates in 110 countries, and enjoys consultative status
with UNIDO, UNESCO, UNCTAD and special relationships with ITC and WIPO.

Changzhou is an ancient cultural city with a history of 2500 years, and
one of the key tourism cities in China which is approved by the State
Council. Changzhou is located in the "Golden Delta" of the lower reaches
of the Yangtze River. It lies half way between the two metropolitan
cities of Shanghai and Nanjing. Together with neighbouring cities of
Suzhou and Wuxi, the famous "Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou" region is formed
with its advanced economy in China.


This Symposium will focus its attention on the multi-level study and
exploration of challenges as well as opportunities faced by the rural
and township industries at the turn of the new century. It would,
therefore, be a good opportunity for friends from all countries of the
world to seek jointly the road of development for rural
industrialization by displaying the fruits of their research in this
field. Thus it will also help deepen mutual understanding among people
of the world and promote friendship and cooperation amongst concerned
agencies and organisations.

The Symposium

First International Symposium on Rural Industrialization '99 (ISRI'99)
will be held at Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China on 20-24 September,
1999.

It is the first ever International Symposium being held to focus
attention on problems, constraints and prospects of Rural
Industrialization. The Symposium will discuss in depth policies for
sustained growth of the non-farm sector and measures for enhancing
credit and technology flows and social dimensions of Rural
Industrialization. Experiences of a few select countries which have
achieved outstanding results in rural industrialization, will also be
presented. Eminent experts are being invited to propose strategies and
policies to accelerate the pace of rural industrialization.


Theme

The Theme of the Symposium will be "Rural Industrialization-2000 and
Beyond Challenges Ahead"


Topics

In keeping with the theme, the Symposium will focus on the latest
research findings, key issues and regional trends around the following
topics:


* Technology Revolution and Rural Industrialization-Strategies and
Challenges
* Changing Face of Credit Delivery System and Rural Industrialization
* Rural Industrialization and Empowerment of Women
* Rural Industrialization-Emerging Role of NGOs
