As part of my participation in the Arkansas Loan Fund Gathering, I
have been requested to compile a list of educational and training
sources for community loan funds.
Specifically, we are looking for potential sources of exportable
training on the specifics of community development lending and deal
making for both housing and business lending. We have an excellent
source for micro-lending within the gathering participants.
I have identified specific community development sources of loan fund
education and training: the National Development Council and the
NAtional Association of Community Development Loan Funds through
their national training conference.
Does anyone know of some other sources?
Thanks.

Contact Kim Bowlin at the Little Rock branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of
St. Louis (sorry, I don't have the number). She has sources and/or can
link you to other Fed data.

Robert,
Shorebank Advisory Services, the consulting subsidiary of Shorebank
Corporation, provides training to a wide variety of community development
financial institutions (CDFIs). We've trained community lenders on such
topics as:
-- conducting market assessments to understand capital and technical
assistance needs and availability;
-- developing underwriting criteria for a loan fund or development bank;
-- defining and developing loan products and services; and
-- writing business plans and preparing financial projections.
In addition, we conduct organizational assessments of development finance
intermediaries. We provide specialized training to loan fund operators to
address their specific skill and information needs. We also provide training
to broad audiences at annual training conferences, including those sponsored
by the National Association of Community Development Loan Funds and the CDFI
Coalition.
Recently, we helped NationsBank to develop its strategy and guidelines for
lending to CDFIs. Our services included training NationsBank Community
Investment Officers and developing a community lending manual containing four
examples of CDFIs and general underwriting guidelines. They are: community
development credit unions, multi-bank community development corporations,
community development loan funds and microenterprise funds.
I would be very interested in discussing options for your institution or
receiving any referrals you might have. I will contact you by phone in the
next few days. Thank you for your time.
