This is Stephen Valk with RESULTS in Atlanta. Regarding info on the
Microcredit Summit (Feb. 2-4, 1997), I'm putting the finishing touches on the
official web site that will go online next week. As soon as it's up, I'll
post the URL.
In the meantime, you can call the Washington office for the summit at
202-546-1900 and they'll send you the big brochure with registration form.
The summit is being held at the Sheraton Washington Hotel. There is a
preparatory meeting in September that will put the finishing touches on the
summit document and plan of action.
In a nutshell, you have to register through your organization after it has
joined one of the summit councils (Council of Practitioners, Council of
Advocates, Council of Financial Institutions, etc.).
With five months to go, the list of councils is now staggering. It is fast
becoming (IMHO) one of the most exciting and momentous gatherings in history.
Thanks,
Stephen

I seemed to have overlooked the originial post, but ...
There's info on the Microcredit summit in the Informal Credit
Homepage too. Have a look under "Events and News"

I think the Declaration and Plan-of-Action are great documents,
and should be read. (Draft available from the above URL).
I agree with Stephen that the Summit is slowly gathering to
be " ... one of the most exciting and momentous gatherings
in history... " I was telling the Results/Japan people that
microcredit is in fact as much about money, as about
information dissemination! 100 million people targetted
before the year 2000 is all right - but parallel to the
effort to raise the kind of money needed, should be the
effort to educate and inform and debate.
Its a pity that individual participants seem to have no place
in the summit, and that we have to find a 'front-ender' to
sponsor us, at least in name! But that does not in any way
absolve us from working towards some of the goals that the
Summit is declaring ... the organizers do seem to have managed
to bring together some pretty good people, and hope that the
momentum they have generated will be multiplied over ...
