IAS-CR1 on listserv@msias.ias.unu.edu Poverty and Sustainable Development
The IAS-CR1 list is the site for discussion (15 Aug - 15 Sept) of a paper
that analyses environment linkages that affect the poor, discusses how to
alleviate poverty; deforestation due to fuelwood gathering and logging by
contractors, impacts of policies of food supplies on hunger and nutrition;
the importance of education and female literacy; and the role of the
developed world.
The presentor is Prof.Jyoti Parikh who is a senior professor at Indira
Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Bombay, India. She completed her
Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics from University of Maryland, U.S.A. She has worked
at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Vienna) for
nearly eight years on energy and environment problems of developing
countries. She has has served as consultant to the World Bank, the U.S.
Department of Energy, European Economic Community (Brussels), and UN
agencies such as UNIDO, FAO, UNU and UNESCO. Prof. Parikh has conducted and
guided projects and Ph.D. theses in the areas of energy demand modeling,
power system simulations, alternative fuels (CNG, ethanol), biomass
allocation in rural energy systems, impacts of climate change, energy
policy, demand side management in electricity sector, natural resource
accounting, sustainable development and restructuring comsumption patterns,
incremental cost and GEF, supporting globally efficient projects by GEF,
North-South issues in IPCC response strategies, joint implementation of
climate change projects, opportunities for North-South cooperation, trade
and environment. She has also initiated projects on air pollution as well
as biodiversity. She is a member of the biodiversity panel for the
executive director of UNEP,(Nairobi) and a member of the Scientific and
Technical Advisory Panel of GEF. She is on the editorial board of various
international journals and authored about 150 articles, books and
monographs in the area of physics, environment and energy. She received
Boutros Ghali Award in 1995 for her contributions in energy, sustainable
development and local and global environment issues.
