The Cape Breton Labourers Development Company in Sydney NS Canada was
established to do just that. Members contibute a couple of cents per hour
to a revolving loan fund. The Company builds homes for its members. There
is no mortgage per se, instead, the company builds the home and charges a
low interest rate on the loan to the new homeowner to pay back the cost of
the home. Gets rid of the ridiculous mortgage interest charges. The whole
setup is a bit more complicated that this, but that's pretty much it in a
