Dear folks:
A new document has been added to the Informal Credit Homepage:
"Low-Income Women's Bank in Benin: Social & Economic Empowerment"
by Mauricette Mongbo, Brandeis University, USA.
It studies the Banques des Femmes of Benin and its impact. " ... More
than 2,000 lower-income women are members of a set of 15 savings &
credit groups, called "Banques des Femmes". In March 1996, the savings
were 10,200,000 FCFA (US$20,400). 1,200 loans amounting to
23,000,000 FCFA (US$46,000) have been given to the members, with a
rate of reimbursement of about 99%. The system started in January
1992 with only 15 women. It is a member-run system, now supervised
by a sectoral development program called Programme d'Appui a
l'Association des Femmes or PAASF ... "

The Benin document itself is at:

Mauricette is also on the lookout for an international organization
/agency that would like to establish a parternship with a local
organization in Benin for a gender strategy development program.
