As communities across Western Massachusetts, and the country for that
matter adopt recycling programs for waste paper, plastics, glass and
metals, I am struck by the absence of such an initiative in Holyoke, Ma
where I work. Is this a window of opportunity to generate job creation
by organizing independent individuals or "micro recyclers" to collect
recylceable waste and either transport it themselves, or contract this
out? I know that programs like this exist in the so-called "third
world". How about in the States? Or is this doomed to failure as soon
as the large waste transporters move in? Any assistance or thoughts from
you folks out there?
