I am a consultant and one of my clients is the Nickerson Gardens Residents
Management Corporation.
These are residents of the largest public housing development in the city of
Los Angeles.
We are preparing a workplan which is aimed at economic development. The plan is
to move people from welfare to work using all of the resources available to the
community, as well as new resources which have come into existance through
recent legislation.
Can list members publish a list of economic development resources they have
identified which might fit our needs?
Thanks!
Alex

There are many publications that deal with economic development but few that
interweave community development and economic development. I suggest that you
contact some of the national organizations that may be most helpful in
getting started including:
The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials
The National Congress for Community and Economic Development
National Council for Urban Economic Development
Local Initiatives Support Corporation
The Council of Large Public HOusing Authorities (not sure if this is the
correct name, sorry).
We recently did a feasibility study and business plan for a public housing
complex in chicago that resulted in a microenterprise program and loan fund
that involved many of the local banks and the state of Illinois.
If you have more specifics, I would be glad to offer some guidance.

Here in NYC, there's a project that makes loans and offers assistance to
public housing residents who own their own businesses. The Lending
Initiative for Tenants (LIFT) is run by the housing authority's Office of
Economic Development. The Executive Director is Ron Ashford.
