Need another staff person who is paid entirely by the US federal Government?
Americorps, President Clinton's new initiative, incorporates the old Kennedy
VISTA program. Alternatives Credit Union has been using VISTA volunteers
for two years (administered by NFCDCU, the National Federation of Community
Devlopment Credit Unions). The work is outreach and education for the
Credit Union, with a specific emphasis on our service to low income
communities. The wages paid by the government are LOW, but are attractive to
someone who is retired and wants an income supplement, someone who is on
public assistance (which is not affected by VISTA payments) or someone who
can use the substantial college tuition benefit.
BENEFITS
Volunteers receive a monthly living allowance to budget for housing, food
and incidentals ($637 per month in our area). The VISTA allowance does not
affect Social Security, Veterans' or public assistance benefits, but is
subject to taxes. VISTA provides comprehensive health coverage for the
volunteer during service, but benefits do not extend to family members or
dependents. Stafford and Perkins student loans may be deferred during VISTA
service. Upon completion of service, a VISTA volunteer is eligible for
either the new $4725 education award or a $95 per month stipend.
ELIGIBILITY
A VISTA volunteer must be a US citizen or permanent resident of the US and
at least 18 years old. There's no upper age limit. A VISTA volunteer may not
be a student or have other employment during their term.
TERM OF SERVICE
VISTA positions last one year. There is a possibility that the position will
be extended for a second year.
TRAINING
Volunteers must participate in orientation and training sessions at the
beginning and during VISTA service.
