KOREAN CHURCHES FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

KCCD’s 3rd “Lighting the Community” Conference

October 7 – 9, 2004

Holiday Inn on the Hill, Washington, DC

415 New Jersey Avenue, Washington, DC 20001

Strengthening Families and Marriages for a Better America

The conference will provide three days of training covering vital issues in the Korean American community, as well as funding and networking opportunities. Last year, over 250 participants representing 13 states attended, and this year we expect to have between 300 and 500 participants. Some previous speakers include Secretary Elaine Chao of U.S. Department of Labor, Jim Towey of the White House Office of Faith-based and Community Initiatives, Luis Cortes of Nueva Esperanza, and Jim Wallis of Sojourners and Call to Renewal.

This year’s conference focuses on strengthening families and marriages for a better America. The rise in family and marriage breakdowns has become a serious societal issue and is creating unintended consequences such as increased gang violence, domestic violence, and homelessness.

The mission of KCCD is to assist the Korean American churches in looking beyond the church walls to provide programs and assist those in need in their communities. Hence this conference will bring together policy makers, elected officials, funders, Asian American pastors, community leaders, and others committed to community development in order to collaborate with the Korean American church community in providing and expanding services to be a light in the community.
