Economic Opportunities Program:
The Economic Opportunities Program (EOP) advances strategies that connect
the poor and underemployed to the mainstream economy. We believe that
alleviating poverty requires changing systems and transforming an
individual's relationship to money, work and assets. We facilitate
participatory learning using applied research to stimulate dialogue and
action among funders, policymakers and non-profit and community leaders.
FIELD, the Microenterprise Fund for Innovation, Effectiveness, Learning, and
Dissemination (FIELD), is a project of the Aspen Institute's EOP. FIELD's
mission is to identify, develop, and disseminate best practices in the field
of microenterprise, and to publicize the value of microenterprise as an
anti-poverty intervention.
Basic Function:
The Research Associate will be a member of the FIELD team. The primary job
duties involve supporting the collection and management of primary data
regarding the performance of the microenterprise industry in the U.S.,
including maintaining regular and friendly correspondence with members of
MicroTest. The RA will assist in organizing and developing training
materials, undertaking research tasks, and otherwise supporting the work of
the team. This position is tied to specific funding through June 2003, with
the possibility of renewal beyond this time frame.
Primary Mission Accountabilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
* Maintain regular communication with participating microenterprise
agencies regarding their work with FIELD and MicroTest. 20%
* Support data collection, management, and analysis associated with
FIELD's work to promote learning and improve practice within the
microenterprise industry. 30%
* Support project management of team through developing project work
plans and other scheduling devices. 20%
* Produce short written pieces such as press releases and
announcements, executive summaries, etc.
* Organize and develop materials for training events, public speaking
engagements and proposals.
* Manage routine correspondence and other communications at the
request of the FIELD Director and other staff.
* Assist in developing presentation materials, such as PowerPoint
presentations, in order to enhance visual effectiveness.
* Undertake research tasks as assigned, including literature reviews,
internet-based research and telephone inquiries.
* Manage data collection for periodic industry surveys, such as the
U.S. Directory of Microenterprise Programs.
* Assist program as necessary.
Note: The above duties without percentages noted constitute 30% of the work
to be performed, in the aggregate.

Principal Interactions:
Works directly with Director of FIELD, Program Manager of MicroTest,
Director of Administration. Has routine interaction with other project,

Knowledge, Education and Experience:
* Bachelor's degree in relevant public policy or social science
discipline and 1 - 3 years related professional experience; Master's degree
in relevant field may be substituted for work experience.
* Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to summarize
material and write reports.
* Demonstrated computer skills including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and
Internet use; familiarity with SPSS and MS Access strongly recommended.
* Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines. Candidate must be
able to work both independently and as part of a close-knit team.
* Flexibility to adapt to changing program priorities.
* Experience demonstrating strong attention to detail and excellent
organization skills.
* Enthusiasm for the ongoing work of the program and a commitment to
economic and social justice.
* Some training or teaching experience preferred.

met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this
