AEO Launches Microenterprise Standards and Accreditation Project (MSAP)
For nearly twenty years, microenterprise development programs in the U.S. have been creating jobs, generating income, building assets and enhancing skills.* At this stage of the development of the field, key stakeholders of microenterprise have encouraged the growth if standards development to provide some type of uniform, reliable quality assessment mechanism.* Voluntary standard setting is a self-organizing behavior undertaken by most organizations to ensure adaptability and survival in a competitive and changing world.
*
The Association for Enterprise Opportunity (AEO) has launched the Microenterprise Standards and Accreditation Project (MSAP) to define standards of acceptable operation/performance for microenterprise development programs/organizations and to measure compliance with them.* The goals of MSAP are to:
·******** Ensure that entrepreneurs across the United States have access to, and information on, high quality microenterprise development services.
·******** Increase the capacity of microenterprise development service providers to provide quality services through a coherent framework for the provision of these services as well as recognition for those that meet quality standards.
·******** Provide funders at the local, regional and national level with an effective mechanism to identify quality microenterprise development service providers.
The MSAP will support and capitalize on current efforts to develop performance standards for the field.* Microtest, an initiative of the Economic Opportunities Program at the Aspen Institute, is working with nearly 100 microenterprise organizations to develop a framework for the analysis of program performance.* The MSAP will build upon Microtest by including Microtest’s performance measures as some of the key indicators in microenterprise standards.
*
A Working Group of practitioners and stakeholders, chaired by AEO Board of Directors President Welthy Soni, has been formed to guide the project.* Each month we will report to the membership on the progress of this initiative.* If you have any questions about the MSAP project, contact Jason Friedman, Senior Manager for Business and Industry Development at jfriedman@assoceo.org (jfriedman@assoceo.org) or by phone at 319-341-3556.
