TO: CDFIs Who Need Information on Market Conditions

FROM: National Community Capital Association

CDFIs need timely and accurate information about their markets, industry,
and the larger economic environment to accomplish their goals. As economic
conditions worsen and the effects trickle down to the CDFI level, National
Community Capital is stepping up its activities to help CDFIs successfully
navigate the turbulence.

The CDFI Market Conditions Report, a new publication based on survey
responses from CDFIs, is the cornerstone of our efforts to encourage and
help CDFIs stay current with market conditions and to identify trends in the
industry. This report provides a snapshot of what CDFIs are experiencing and
anticipating in their work as their operating environment evolves. It tracks
trends in delinquencies, financing demand, workouts, funding, and
competition for deals.

To date, National Community Capital has designed and disseminated two
surveys and produced two CDFI Market Conditions Reports based on the
findings of these surveys. Leading CDFI practitioners have praised these
initial reports as a critical source of market information directly relevant
to the CDFI industry. The analysis and comments from the reports have
spurred thinking about how the economic downturn is affecting CDFIs and how
they are responding nationwide. CDFI executives have already begun to use
the reports as a way to broadly measure themselves against their peers, to
communicate with their staff, board, funders, and investors, and to gain
traction in grasping the impact on their work.

If you want your CDFI to participate, please e-mail your request to Katelyn
Sullivan at katelyns@communitycapital.org and she will e-mail you the
survey. Once we have compiled the results, we will send you a copy of the
Market Conditions Report. Timeliness is key to making this report useful, so
please contact Katelyn by January 15, 2002.
