The World Council of Credit Unions, Inc. (WOCCU) launched its Savings Best
Practices project in 2000 to share lessons learned from the savings
mobilization experiences of Latin American credit unions with all
microfinance institutions (MFI) interested in expanding or initiating
savings services. Visit the WOCCU website at www.woccu.org and click on
"Savings Best Practices" on the homepage and/or the Microfinance &
Development page to find information on savings mobilization. (Para
información en español, visite
http://www.woccu.org/education/SavingsBP/indexesp.htm.)

The Savings Best Practices project hosts three conferences that are open to
the public.

WOCCU co-hosted the first conference in its Savings Mobilization Best
Practices series with Deutscher Genossenschafts und Raiffeissenverband
(DGRV, the German Cooperative Confederation), Federación Nacional de
Cooperativas de Ahorro y Crédito del Perú (FENACREP) and the U.S. Agency for
International Development (USAID) in October 2001 in Lima, Peru. View the
presentations and workshop information from the first savings conference at
http://www.woccu.org/education/SavingsBP/peru.htm.

These practitioner-focused conferences bring credit unions together with
other MFIs to enable them to share lessons learned and participate in
workshops that provide training in the use of key savings marketing and
management tools. Topics include: institutional pre-conditions; products,
policies and procedures; financial analysis and qualitative analysis;
internal controls; liquidity management; pricing; cash management;
conducting market studies; new product design and launch; branding;
conducting marketing campaigns; and costing. Additionally, practitioners
from the region present case studies of their own experiences in savings
mobilization.

The next training conference is scheduled for April 23-25, 2002 in Managua,
Nicaragua. This conference will be conducted in Spanish and is open to all
MFIs in Latin America interested in mobilizing savings. Registration
information will be available on the WOCCU website at the end of January.

The third and final Best Practices in Savings Mobilization conference will
be held in English in Washington, D.C. on November 6-7, 2001. WOCCU will
publish a Tool Kit of Best Practices in Savings Mobilization for use by the
international microfinance community. WOCCU plans to release the tool kit
at the November conference. This final conference is open to all
institutions interested in mobilizing savings.

In a complementary initiative, regional seminars on credit union supervision
provide forums for regulators and policymakers to discuss best practices and
to learn about the tools essential to effective supervision. The next
supervision seminar will take place in May 2002 in Mexico City, Mexico.
This seminar is in Spanish and is by invitation only. Regulators and
policymakers should contact WOCCU for more information. View the
presentations from the first supervision seminar that took place in August,
2001 in Quito, Ecuador, co-hosted by WOCCU, DGRV, the Ecuadorian
Superintendency of Banks and USAID, at
http://www.woccu.org/education/SavingsBP/ecuador.htm.
