BlankJOB OPENING – SENIOR TAX EDUCATOR/ORGANIZER


United for a Fair Economy (UFE), a dynamic national nonprofit organization based in Boston, Massachusetts, is seeking an experienced popular educator and organizer to participate in our expanding tax education program. Since 2000, UFE has played a national role educating the public about the importance of progressive taxation, both for fairness and in order to generate sufficient revenue to fund vital public programs. UFE also works closely with partner organizations in various states to address budget deficits and promote progressive tax reforms.



UFE raises awareness that concentrated wealth and power undermine the economy, corrupt democracy, deepen the racial divide, and tear communities apart. We support and help build social movements for greater equality. UFE is a national, independent, non-partisan nonprofit organization.



Job Description:


Reports to: Director of State Tax Education



UFE is seeking a Senior Tax Educator/Organizer who would be housed in UFE’s tax education program. This program helps build organizing capacity in a number of states to win fair state tax policies that would raise adequate revenues to fund vital public programs and services. We work with coalitions ranging from grassroots neighborhood organizations to groups that conduct state fiscal policy analysis. The tax education program implements short- and long-term strategies to build support for progressive tax policies. We are building a national collaboration among all these groups to enhance advocacy for fair state and federal tax policy as well.



Job Duties:



A. Coordinate UFE’s “Children’s Investment” Program, which works with constituencies that care about children’s issues (education, health care, early child care, childhood nutrition, etc.) and links them to state and federal tax and budget fights.



a.. Develop resources and tools for organizing groups attempting to build stronger links to children’s investment constituencies.
b.. Maintain communications between children’s investment and tax organizing groups.
c.. Oversee UFE’s children’s initiative grant making program to state and local organizations.


B. Work closely with state partner organizations to build capacity

a.. Provide assistance in developing popular education workshops for state and local organizations.
b.. Lead workshops and train people to lead them.
c.. Assist state organizations in campaign development, creative communications and other activities to support local organizing.


C. Assist in creating a national Tax Fairness Organizing Collaborative, an effort to bring together state and regional tax organizing groups, and increase their resources and capacity to defend and advocate for progressive tax systems.



a.. Work with the Director of the Tax Fairness Organizing Collaborative to implement the collaborative, including organizing conferences, telephone meetings and other opportunities for collaborative members to learn from each other.


Qualifications and Skills Required:



a.. Experience educating/presenting information to people/groups, preferably using popular education methodology
b.. 3-5 years experience working with grassroots organizations
c.. Excellent written and spoken communication
d.. Experience with and commitment to progressive social change efforts
e.. Experience working on one or more state or federal policy issues
f.. Willingness to travel to work with state partner organizations (averaging one trip per month); driver’s license and portable auto insurance
g.. Resourceful, takes initiative
h.. Good team player; ability to work cooperatively
i.. Commitment to building a multicultural organization and movement
j.. Web research, basic usage of database, and other computer experience


Helpful Skills/Attributes:



a.. Knowledge of/experience working with child advocacy organizations
b.. Bilingual Spanish/English
a.. Knowledge of tax and budget policy issues
a.. Website maintenance


Compensation:



$36,000-$39,000, based on experience, plus 100% employer-paid health insurance through HMO Blue, monthly MBTA pass, and 5% employer contribution toward a retirement plan.
